Vladimir Rhys.
Photographic category:
Vladimir Rhys is a famous photographer who specialises in sports photography, the types of sports that he likes to capture is mainly Formula One and Olympic sports.
One of the main purposes of a sports photographer is to capture defining moment in a sports event, normally these photos are then released to certain newspapers or magazines as some photographers work with for publishers.
Purpose:
Vladimir Rhys had worked for two European sports magazine companies Hattrick( Czech republic ) and Bongarts Sportfotografie ( Germany ), when he had worked for these two companies his main purpose was to capture spectacular sports images for them to publish. However since 2010 he has become freelance, he now has his own website where he uploads all of his photo onto his portfolio.

A lot of the photos that Rys captures could be used in sports magazines, Rys best work comes from formula 1 so those photos could be published in magazines like 'Motorsport'. His photos could also be used be Sky sports HQ, a lot of their adverts for sports events have montages of a number of sports photos that captures the defining moment in that particular sport.
Image analysis:
In the photos that Rhys takes he uses lighting connote the mood and the emotions at the time the photo was taken. The two photos of Manchester United celebrating have a very natural lighting to it, the colours are very bright with connotes more happier emotions. However the other two photos are not as bright and the background is very dark, this puts all of the focus onto the centre subject. In these two photos the atmosphere is very tense and all of the colours, lighting and editing techniques connote this.

For this image Rys would have used a fish-eye lens so that he could capture the whole stadium, a fish-eye lens allows you to capture a lot more of a area than a regular lens would do but it also adds the a rounding effect to the image. This photo was taken at the champions league final which was between Barcelona and Manchester United. Because both of these two teams are very big in Europe there was lots of excitement prior to the match. The fish-eye lens was also used so that he didn't crop out any of the stadium, this is because the stadium is one of the most important things within the photo. This image is in deep dethp of field and this is because every aspect of the image is important, if certain aspects of the image which are out of focus would draw away the attention of that particular item. Because the fish-eye lens was used at the time the picture was taken the composition of this image is slightly different to other pictures, the rule of thirds is not as obvious in this photo as everything is in focus. Because of this you could say that the deep depth of field was used in this picture, this was used to connote to the audience the magnitude of the atmosphere at the time the picture was taken. By using the deep depth of field Rys could have the whole picture in focus and by having the whole picture in focus it connotes to the audience that all aspects of the image is important. This picture was take at an low angle and this is done to show the dominance of the football players, this is because the players have the power to produce a memorable game. In terms of lighting, because there is a lot of artificial lighting I would say that a faster shutter speed was used. The shutter speed that would have been used in this picture would be at 1/250th or higher, the other reason for this is that there is movement at the time the picture was taken, So for the picture to appear frozen a high shutter speed is needed. Because of the quality of the picture I would say that the ISO would be lower and also, there is a lot of light in the picture so there is no need for a higher ISO. Since the picture is is in deep depth of field I would say that the aperture size is at a f/16.
Andy Rouse
Photographic category:
Andy Rouse is a well known wildlife photographer, Andy has been credited with 9 awards in the past 7 years in the BBC wildlife photographer of the year competition. He is known for capturing some of the most dangerous animals in some of the most unorthodox styles.
Purpose:
Because of Andy's status in the photographer community, he is successful enough to publish his own work. Andy has now published 15 books, covering species and ecosystems. One of Andy's main purposes is to help protect wildlife and help all of the endangered species flourish, he does this by donating most of the money he gains through his photography to certain conservations. Alongside of this he also takes pictures for his own personal enjoyment.
Image analysis:
The composition of this picture is very traditional in the sense that you can clearly see the three parts of the picture that makes up the rule of thirds. In the foreground you can see the water, in the middle section you can see the bear fighting and in the background you can see the woodlands. This makes the picture seem balanced. From looking at the background you can see that it is out of focus, this means that the depth of field that was used was a shallow depth of field. One of the reason this was used was because so that Andy could draw in all of the attention to the two bears fighting, the other reason for this is so that Andy could connote to the audience how fearsome bears can be. The way this picture taken shows of the stature of the bears which adds to how intimidating they look. For this picture the shutter speed would have been quite fast, I would say that the shutter speed for this picture would be at 1/250th or higher. This is because you can see the a lot of detail in the picture even down to the little droplets of water from the splash of the bears. Another way of knowing that this picture was taken at a high is that it is obvious from looking at the picture that the bears are moving however the image appears frozen. In terms of aperture I would say that this picture was taken at an aperture of f5.6 and this is because the although the foreground and the middle section is in focus the background is out of focus meaning that the picture is in shallow depth of field
Almost all of Andy's pictures are taken in the day light and they are not edited. Since wildlife photography can be very risky in terms of the tolerance of some of the animals. Therefore Andy uses a range of techniques to try and capture the right image depending on the situation, these range from tight head shots to full body portraits. However a lot of his picture are full body portraits, this allows him to show of the whole animal instead of just focusing on one spot. Another feature in some of his photos is that there is always a pair of something, for example two tigers or two gorillas, this is called a two-shot and it is usually framed as a mid shot. Most of the photos that he take are at eye level, and this is because it gives perspective of what it would have been like if you was actually there.
The lighting is one of the features of Andy's work that connotes meaning, as stated before most if not all of his work is capture in the day light. This is because it is easier for Andy to capture the image and also, he wouldn't want to add artificial lighting to the scene, This is because it would then defeat its purpose of trying to trying to capture things in their natural habitat. Another feature that connotes meaning is how he likes to capture images with pairs in them, this is because it allows him to complete his purpose as a wildlife photographer. This type of work connotes to people how animals interact with each other in their natural habitat. For some of his photos he would have had to use a telephoto lens so that he can zoom into the animal that he is trying to capture but not so much that it fits under the category macro, this is done so that he does not disturb the wildlife as a lot of the animals are quite unpredictable when it comes to how they will react to human interference.
Henrik Knudsen.
Photographic category:
Henrik Knudsen is a famous photographer from Denmark, his work often has a narrative content and it is mainly influenced by film and cinema. However from looking at a lot of his personal projects I it clear that he like to capture the theme of travel.
Purpose:
One of the main purposes of Henrik's work is for advertising, like the other photographers named above he is not freelance so he works for other companies. Some of these companies are:
- McDonalds
- Apple
- Samsung
- Channel 4
- Sky
Image analysis:
The way in which this photo is composed is very balanced, like all photographers he has used the rule of thirds rule to compose this. In the foreground section of the photo you can see the ground along with the sea. In the middle section you can see the fisherman and he is within the vocal points, the vocal points draws in the attention of the viewer to the main part of the photo and in this case it is the fisherman. In the background section of the photo you can see the sky, all of these three sections make up the rile of thirds. For this picture I would say that the shot types a very wide shot and this is because the subject is visible (barely) but the emphasis is still on placing him on the environment. I would also say that the angle is at an eye level, this type of angle is a fairly neutral angle. For this is picture I would say that the deep depth of field was used as the focus covers a large area front to back and I think that the aperture of this picture is f11. This is because the foreground is not completely in focus but the rest of the picture is. This type of depth of field is often associated with landscape photography but it can also connote storytelling because you can have multiple visual story-lines or characters at various points of the photo. In this instance one of the connotations of this picture is how empty this world can be, although the world has a population of 7 billion and rising sometimes people can feel so alone when they have no one to talk to. Since this picture is very bright I would say this would have needed a faster shutter speed as less time is needed to capture the light to make the image, I would say that this image was taken with a shutter speed of 1/125th. The is because although it is very bright it is a still image so therefore anything over 1/125th is not needed. One of the other settings that would have been changed on the camera to take this picture would be the ISO settings. The ISO setting for this picture would have been at a lower setting and this is because the picture is quite clear, if the ISO setting was higher then the picture would ave turned out more grainy.

Andreas Gursky
Photographic category:
Andreas Gursky is a professional german photographer, is specialises in architecture and in landscape colour photographs. The main purpose of his work is to display it in exhibitions.
Purpose:
Andreas Gursky is a freelance photographer and he has never worked for a company, a lot of the work that he does is mostly personal as they was pictures of his work whilst he was an architect. The other part of his work is purely for the entertainment of other people, however a lot of his pieces are known for being very expensive.
Image analysis:
The way in which this photo is composed is very balanced as
it shows you the rule of thirds. In the foreground you have the part of the
track, in the middleground you have the main focus of the photo which is the
pit crew surrounding the car and in the background you have the people in the
stands. One of the other techniques that Gursky uses to show that the
middleground is the main focus of the photo is through editing. He has faded
the surrounding areas in black and has emphasised the colour of the car and pit
crew. For this photo the shot type is a wide shot and he does this so that he
can show off size of the pit crew. This
also shows of the importance of the men that help with the cars maintenance as
many fans of formula one know that keeping the car in good condition is a lot
of work. From looking at the picture you
can see that it is in deep depth of field as everything that is in frame is in
focus however, for a photo like thins would have been perfect in shallow depth
of field because the main subject of the photo would be in focus. But from my
understanding the photo would have been in deep depth of field because all of
the main action would have been too far away and it would result in the photo
being out of focus. For this photo I would say that the shutter speed would be
around 1/1000 and this would be done to the fact that at the time the picture would have been taken there would have been a lot of movement. Since everything that is in the frame is in focus I would say that the aperture size would be at f/11, this also explains why the shutter speed is very fast. The angle at which this photo was taken in is at eye level and this is because this allows people to get a sense of what it would be like to be in that sort of atmosphere. I would say that the iso setting for the camera would be at around 400, this is because there is a lot of natural lighting which is good for that type of picture. Also having to iso at 400 allows the user to take pictures with a high shutter speed.
