Conflicting sheffield.

In this piece I wanted to connote how things like football which is meant to bring people closer together can divide a city, especially since what happened between most of the cites in Yorkshire and Margret Thatcher. It is like what I have portrayed in the picture, when it comes to football it is like the city has been split in two. This is linked to my assignment where need to show of the identity of sheffield, one of the things that sheffield is known for is its football.

Old vs New

In this piece I wanted to connote a contrast between the old and the new park hill flats. I have managed to replicate the old 80's look onto the new building. This was done to connote that although all of the the flats are being replaced the old ones will never be forgotten and that is because of its history. To maintain a strong sense of community, neighbours were re-homed next door to each other and old street names from the area were re-used (e.g. Gilbert Row, Long Henry Row).

Frame of reference

In this piece I wanted to connote different ways of looking at the cheesegrater car park. In the first image you have the old painting, this one connotes how some people see that building as a piece of art, something that is creative and pleasing to the eye. The second one is dark and this connotes all of the negative views about the building. Many people argue that Sheffield doesn't need another car park, and it makes even more sense when there is another car park just across the road. The other piece has an old looking texture, this connotes to people how some people see the cheesegrater as a new piece of history by making its mark on Sheffield. The forth piece has an underwater texture to it and this was because some people thing that there is just not enough money laying around for needless car parks, which has now left people thinking that Sheffield has now been submerge in a lot of debt. The last piece was left plane and that is because some people just see it as just another building that has been built for tourism.

Stirling Prize

The reason for this piece is to connote how park hill is now increasing the rate of tourism in Sheffield now that the project was short listed in the final six for the RIBA Stirling prize which is a British prize for excellence in architecture. It is things like this that make the park hill project a promising one and it could end up being reconsigned world wide once it is finished.

Dark Fantasy

The reason for this piece is to connote everything kelham island has done for Sheffield, by having the picture as over-exposed. However its the negative that gives it this look and that corresponds with negative effects this had one Kelham island as it tried to balance the water level of the river Don and provide electicity of all the trams that had just been introduced back in 1899.

Usable Photographs:

This photo is of the new end of the Park hill flats this is going to make up one third of the of one of my final pieces. I think this is useable because this side of the building is similar to the older version of the flats. Since this picture is meant to be a reflection of the past building there needed to be some resemblance with the old building. The shot type for this picture was a wide shot and this was because I needed to capture the majority of the newer side of the building without standing too far out. Because of the size and stature of the building the angle at which the shit was taken at was a low angle, this connotes how intimidating the building can be. The shot was also taken in landscape, it had to be taken in landscape because it allows the camera to take in as much of the scene as possible. Taking it in portrait will cut out most of the picture. This picture was taken in the mode scene auto intelligence and the aperture of the picture was at f/18.0 which makes everything in the picture in focus. This means that the picture is in deep depth of field, this is important in terms of meaning because it connotes the importance of the building. These settings ensure that everything that was in frame was frozen and in focus, for this type of photography this is important because if everythign was in focus then it allows you to all of the little details of the object. The way in which this photo is composed shows that is it not balanced and this is because the photo is made of one object being the building however, the composition of the photo does not matter the foreground will be taken out in Photoshop so that I can use it how I wish to in my final piece. This photo is going to make up one tird of my final piece, to create meaning in this image I plan to have this photo resting on top of calm pool of water. Then I want to the old Park hill to at the bottom of the new park hill, it should be a reflection of the new park hill.

This photo was taken near western park and it is very popular place to fish in.Out of all the ones that I had taken this was the one that it usable because this was the one only had the water in the frame and that was what I was going for. The shot type for this photo was a medium close up, this was the best choice for this photo because originally I had tried a mid shot. However other objects was in the frame, I then tried a close up but, this time the camera was at angle which made the photo look slight off. Although I had to get down low so that I could take the picture since I could not be completely level with the water the photo had to be taken at an high angle. In this picture everything is in focus so therefore it is in deep depth of field, since there is only one thing that is in the frame the photo would need to be in deep depth of field. As there is only main thing to focus on the rule of thirds does not apply in this circumstance. The one thing that I would change about this would be the water, I would have wanted the water to be a lot calmer, this is because it would have then been a lot easier to edit of Photoshop since I would not have to worry about copying the texture of the water onto the image. This image wont really having any editing techniques applied to it as this is going to be the thing that allows the reflection of the Park hill flats.

This photo was taken on top of the Amphitheatre, this photo is going to make up one of my other final pieces. Out of all the photos I have taken from this location I would say that this one is the usable one because there aren't any obstructions that are in the frame and you can clearly see over Sheffield. This photo is a wide shot and it is landscape, for this particular scene it needed to be a wide shot because I needed to capture as much of Sheffield as I could. This was also achieved by using a wide lens. The angle of this photo is at eye level, this was done so that I could show off Sheffield from my point of view. I want people to see Sheffield through my perspective so having the photo at eye level is important. The way in which the photo is composed complies with the rule of thirds. In the foreground you can see the grass steps, in the middle ground you have the buildings and in the background sky. The shutter speed of this photo is 1/125, this is considered average and I found it useful for scenic places. The aperture of this photo is f7.1 and this make everything that is in frame in focus meaning that the photo is in deep depth of field. The one thing that I would want to improve is the lighting of the photo, this is because the photo is quite dark and I have planned for all of the my photos to be taken in the sun. This is one of the photos that I will be editing in Photoshop, this will be the main section of the photo. I plan to have the crests and the club names of the two football clubs in Sheffield placed on either side of the photo, I want to show that although Sheffield in united as a city the rivalry between two football clubs and separate it.

This photo was taken within Kelham Riverside, just outside the museum. Out of all of the photos that I have taken at this location this one was the most usable as I had managed to to get the picture very similar to what I wanted it to look like in my sketch. The shot type for this photo is a wide shot, this is because although I wanted the sign as the main subject of the photo the background was needed for what I have planned for for it on Photoshop. The photo was also taken at eye level and this was because I wasn't trying to show off any dominance or vulnerability but instead show people how I view things, taking photos at eye level can give it a more realistic view. The way in which this photo is composed makes the Kelham island sign the main focus of the photo, in the foreground you have the railings along with the ground, in the middleground you have the main focus of the photo which is the Kelham island sign and in the background there is the view of the buildings and the sky. The way in which these three sections are composed make the photo balanced. The photo in also in deep depth of field however, for this photo it could have been in either deep depth or shallow depth of field because the only thing that really needs to be on focus is the black kelham island sign. This photo was taken in the mode Scene Auto Intelligence scene and at the time the photo was taken the shutter speed was at 1/160 and the aperture f/8.0

This is a photo of the cheese grater car park, I had taken three photos of this building but this one was the most usable one of the three because this one has the sky included in the picture. This photo is a wide shot of the building and it was taken at a low angle. The main reason for the picture being taken at a low angle is that it shows of the stature of the building, this is important because this building was voted the worlds coolest car park so the picture needs to be taken at the right angle. This photo is taken in shallow depth of field and this is because the building is the main subject of the image. The way in which is composed does not follow the rule of thirds because there is only the foreground and the background, no middle ground. In terms of taking the picture there was nothing I could of done to improve the quality of the picture as there was a number of obstructions that was in the way if I was to take the picture in a different place. This photo was taken in the mode Scene Auto Intelligence and the shutter speed of the picture was 1/400. The shutter speed was slightly faster than the average shutter speed for a still image and this was because to the left of the building there was lots of other work going on so there was cranes moving around. The aperture size was quite small and that was because it was very bright outside and if the aperture size was any bigger then the picture would have been over exposed.

This photo is of the bridge which connects two sections of the park hill flats together. This was the most usable photo and this was because it also has part of the background in the frame. This is a mid shot of the bridge and becuase of where I was positioned it had to be taken at a low angle. The reason for taking this photo in a mid shot was so that I could include the part of the background, this is important for what I want to do on Photoshop. This photo is in deep depth of field however, shallow depth of field would have worked too. This is because althought the background of the image is important it is going to be edited out as I only need the space. The way in which the photo is composed complies with the rule of thirds as there is the foreground, the middleground and the background. The shutter speed of this picture is at 1/160, this is the average shutter speed of any sort of still image. The aperture of this picture is at f/8.0, since it wasn't too bright outside the aperture size doesn't need to be any smaller or bigger. For this picture I had used a startdard kit lens. For this picture I plan to have the park hill sign on the side of the bridge, and then have the background of the image filled with clouds. However there will be beams of light shining of the clouds and onto the sign.

This photo is of the sheffield wednesday club crest, most of the photos that I took of this image was usable however I chose this one. This is a close up of the crest and because of my surroundings it was taken at a low angle. It was taken as a close because I dont need the surrounding areas of the crest, the main focus of the photo needs to be the crest. Because the camera mode was set in scene auto intellegence mode the photo was taken deep depth of field however,
shallow depth of field would have worked for this picture because the only thing thay needs to be in focus is the crest. The wya in which this photo is composed does not comply with the rule of thirds as there is only the middleground. The aperture at which the photo was taken at was f/5.6, this was because on the day I took this picture it was qiute dark and when I had tried to use the flask the picture then bacme too bright to use. The shutter speed of this photo is 1/400, the shutter speed had to be slight faster than usual and this was because the size of the aperture was bigger, of the shutter speed was any less than is then the picture would be overexposed. When it comes to my final pieces this picture will be used along side with the picture of the Amphitheatre whereby I show how both of the football teams in sheffield can divide a city.

When it comes to my final pieces this picture will be used along side with the picture of the Amphitheatre whereby I show how both of the football teams in sheffield can divide a city.

Out of all of the photos that I had taken this one was the best one because the sun light provided the right lighting for the photo. This is a close up of the sign and because of my surroundings it was taken at a low angle. It was taken as a close up because I don't need any of the surrounding areas, the main focus of the photo needs to be the sign. Because the camera mode was set in scene auto intelligence mode the photo was taken deep depth of field however, shallow depth of field would have worked for this picture because the only thing thay needs to be in focus is the crest. The way in which this photo is composed fits into the rule of thirds. In the foreground you have all of the necessary scaffolding, middleground is the sheffield united sign and the background is the skyline. The aperture of this photo is considered 'average' for taking daily picutres, the size of the aperture is f/8.0. Since it wasn't too dark or too bright outside having the aperture at just 'average' is good for me. This is the same for the shutter speed, especially since this is a still image. The shutter speed for this image is 1/200.
